In October of 2019, PRM celebrated breast cancer awareness. For Think Pink, classrooms had a poster contest, students were encouraged to bring in a $1 donation, students wore pink, enjoyed a pink cupcake and gathered in the gym for a school-wide assembly. In true PRM tradition, the school duct taped the principal to the wall! To open the assembly, Ms. Simpson briefly spoke that they gathered to support those around us who have been touched by breast cancer – to celebrate those who have fought and won, to support those currently fighting and to remember those who have lost. Ms. Simpson shared in celebration about her grandmother, 91 years old, a breast cancer survivor and our very own 6-9 teacher, Ms. Becky, and a number of mothers of students at PRM. Ms. Simpson guided us to celebrate, remember and support – and to have some fun! She willingly and wholeheartedly stood on top of some gym mats to be duct taped to the wall by PRM’s M.O.R.E. gentlemen students, a few teachers and a few parent volunteers. Ms. Stegman played some kids bop music and gave status updates and interviews to check on Ms. Simpson. When asked how she was doing at one point, Ms. Simpson replied how hot it was! She was taken care of by Mr. David and other teachers with sips of water and fanning for a cool breeze. The students may not remember the words they created with the movable alphabet that afternoon or Cincinnati chili they had for lunch, but they will forever remember PRM’s super hero principal Ms. Simpson duct taped to the wall. They will remember how she broke free from hundreds of strips of duct tape for breast cancer awareness. It mirrored how we support each other, giving help to hold each other up, sips of water and countless smiles so that those affected with cancer, can break free – to which, we can all take part. Today, we celebrate, today we support and today we remember all who are touched by breast cancer.
